ABOUT US

Origin

The North Carolina Black Elected Municipal Officials represents the vision of a trenchant delegation of elected officials who gathered in Asheville, N.C. during the 1981 Annual meeting of the North Carolina League of Municipalities and proclaimed the need for active engagement within the structure of NCLM. The element of change envisioned was to create an environment for black elected officials to become an integral part of the operations of the League. Today, NCBEMO is a nonpartisan, nonprofit statewide organization of current black elected municipal officials and supporters of the organization.

Our Focus

Since its formation 30 years ago NCBEMO has taken the lead in supporting public service as a way to implement change for citizens of North Carolina. We strive to achieve political and community transformation through training, education, collaboration, advocacy and outreach programs that promote the mission of the organization.

Benefit to YOU

We provide a forum for information on public policy; serve as an advocate for positive legislative change and oppose injurious legislation; cooperate with all levels of government and agencies to develop intergovernmental policy and programs; promote, sponsor or conduct training programs; promote education in municipal government; support officials in the administration of their affairs; and provide opportunities to study, discuss, interchange ideas and experiences, obtain expert advice to improve their cities.

Benefit to US

At the October 2006 Annual NCLM Annual meeting, NCBEMO proudly honored our founders and celebrated twenty-five years of history. Now, as we look toward the future, “Turning Silver into Gold,” we are counting on your expertise to help us build the organization so that we can guide other promising 21st century black elected municipal officials in reshaping the future of North Carolina for our children and our children’s children.
